Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is one of 9 reservoirs in the system. They would need to reoperate the others and make additional investments. Their system is “mostly” gravity driven, and it would remain so. If they expand filtration at Sunol, they would need to “break gravity” at that point. They would lose about 20% of their hydropower.
Hetch Hetchy is dammed by the 430-foot-tall O’Shaughnessy Dam and has a storage capacity of 360,360 acre-feet. It is the primary water source for about 2.5 million residents of the San Francisco Bay Area. Hetch Hetchy’s (HH) turnoff is about a mile from the Highway 120 gate and about 10 miles in. From the road, you can see the reservoir and along the reservoir are three hiking trails. The shortest one is the Wapama, 2.7 miles one way. HH is a water system that supports the water for the Bay area.
